Speaking From Experience
Last Friday, there was a drug bust directly in front of PJP Nifong. There were several police cars, a fire truck, and an ambulance involved, making for an EXCELLENT distraction from our terrifyingly large baking schedule due for Mother’s Day orders. By the time the officers pulled out a baggie of drugs from the car, most of us were plastered to the front windows watching it all play out like an episode of Live PD. (Though, in our defense, there was a guy who sat outside at the Subway picnic table and just enjoyed his Cold Cut Combo while watching and just that seems more awkward.)
Here’s what else from last week:
Someone left us a one-star Google review because he froze his cream pie and it turned out like a “blob”. Just for good measure, he also left the identical review on Yelp. AWESOME. (He also never called to complain, nor could I find a record of the sale in our transactions.). Entrepreneurship is for those with thick skin and sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever move past getting my feelings hurt when people are mean on the Internet. Doubtful.
We are finally experiencing some supply shortages from COVID-19 in some surprising ways, namely in large paper bags and egg yolks. I would guess the paper bags are because of the increase in takeout orders at restaurants everywhere, but handing someone a stack of pies without a bag is awkward at best and annoying at the least. But not as annoying as cracking and separating egg yolks. I speak from experience.
Some of our staff who self-quarantined are slowly starting to return to a regular schedule, making everything feel a little bit more normal around PJP. Today we welcomed back Summer and Elaine and I appreciated the comfort of additional staff who are familiar with PJP. While I’m always usually at the shop, I did take a big chunk of time out this morning to get my hair colored and I have no regrets.
But I did have to deal with someone today who wanted to let us know how awful we are at running a business because UPS adjusted the arrival of her Jelly Jar shipment due to weather conditions. Apparently, she believes we run a bad business because we don’t put better controls on UPS. She promised me she plans to leave a review about my poor management of UPS drivers. Lady, if I were in charge, UPS drivers would at least get to close doors on their trucks and the right to complain about heavy packages.
But for all that, we had emails and DMs on Instagram thanking us for how hard we were working to meet specific needs last week and notes of thanks from super excited moms who enjoyed their Mother’s Day pie tastings. It’s all that kindness that makes everything worthwhile. Well, and watching an arrest go down three feet from our front door. Ahem.
