Glitter of the Baking World
You’ve probably seen by now that we did decide to close today, but let me be clear: I made myself miserable over the decision. I had a 2 pm meeting this afternoon for a super secret project we are working on. I stopped by PJP Nifong beforehand to check on the heat and the water and then I just panicked because everything was all out of routine and I really hate when things are out of routine. It didn’t help that the store is still decorated for Valentine’s Day. Or that I evaluated my closure decision by the fullness of parking lot of every restaurant and fast food restaurant. Frankly, I’m sick of my own self. Tomorrow we are opening and making pie regardless of the weather. (Watch us wake up to a small scale blizzard because I said that.)
Here’s a roundup of what else we’ve been doing, besides stressing about weather we can’t control:
Our first ever Epic Kid’s Pie Tasting last Friday was a rousing success. We had a lot of fun creating the six flavors of tarts that were over-the-top silly. My favorite part was when Anna (who created the list) sent me the shopping list and it included Fruity Pebbles AND Cinnamon Toast Crunch AND gummy worms. The feedback from our youngest fans - and their families - was enough to convince us to schedule another in the spring.
Speaking of pie tasting, there is ONE ticket left for February’s regular Epic Pie Tasting on the 26th. You can purchase it here.
We’ve added adorable little “Keep Frozen” stickers to all pot pies and quiches that are for sale in the freezer. It’s amazing how many people call once they get home and ask if they can keep either frozen quiche or pot pie in the refrigerator. And that just goes to show that figuring out the correct packaging and labeling is an evolving process.
Next week, we are going to ship some tart six packs to six volunteer recipients across the United States. Fingers crossed for a second successful shipping option.
Our Valentine’s weekend baking schedule went swimmingly until someone dropped a bucket of cornstarch and basically made it rain cornstarch in our baking area. And if you’ve ever worked with cornstarch, you know it is the glitter of the baking world - hard to clean up and gets everywhere. (Please note: mask quickly removed for a good picture…and to be replaced by a cornstarch free mask.)
