Jeanne-ology: Unemployable
Hi There, it’s Thursday. This afternoon I called Jeanne to ask her if she planned to blog and she said “what day is it?”. That’s a total 2020 mood, for sure. Enjoy! Rebecca

Hello Thursday Readers! Another week, another dollar in pie sales, another order for Thanksgiving, another making the dough, another rolling out the dough, and another and another. Working at the pie shop the days seems to roll in one another. Not every day is the same, but the same routine for baking. Entrepreneurship is hard work and the hours seem endless. The physical hours are grueling but the mental stress is epic. (Rebecca editing to add: Preach it, sister.)
It is great to be your own boss. I consider myself unemployable because I’ve hated every 8 - 5 job I’ve ever had. I hated scheduled lunches and making sure I was not clocking out before 5 pm! Having some good bosses and some bosses I wish I never knew. Those feelings were why I wanted to own my own business. Deciding what type of business took some time for me to figure out. I knew I was a great pie maker and not until I had served an apple pie to some out of town guests did a light bulb turn on. They commented that you can't buy a homemade pie anymore and what a shame it was. That compliment urged me to scout out the possibility of opening a pie shop. That was in 1994! (Rebecca editing to add: Sorry if you ever worked with her at any of those pre-1994 jobs, but it’s true…she super hated the routine of a regular desk job.)
Rebecca is about the same age I was when we first opened in 1994. She has the same strong energy level and commitment. Thank goodness! I am the age of Peggy now when we first opened. Rebecca keeps our business current using all sort of resources that I don't understand. I admit that I really don't care how it works because Rebecca does. She is the true leader pushing us forward. I think she would agree that owning a business is rewarding but stressful. She knows that even bad days occur with any business, but the main goal is to deliver a top quality product and to just keep pushing forward. (Rebecca editing to add: That’s a lot to unpack. I have no idea why thinks I’m the leader because today I had to call her for a quick consult and she had to remind me that I am a leader. So, I don’t know. But I think that makes her the Chief, right?)
My granddaughter is in charge of Instagram and merchandising. Perhaps someday she will be leading our pie shop into the future and Rebecca will my age now. Maybe she will blog about how she became a business owner and how things have changed in 26 years. For me, the pie baking process will never change because a Walmart pie or a grocery store pie can never compete with a hundred year old recipe made from scratch recipe. (Rebecca editing to add: I feel like there won’t be blogs in 26 years, which is sad. Though, we will probably just think something in our minds and it will appear on the Internet five seconds later. Also, I looked at a .94 cent lemon pie today at Walmart and it was an offense to the pie baking industry.)
