Scoville Scale
I wish there were a plethora of interesting things to tell you, but there is nothing less interesting than a Wednesday in January in retail. I will jump in to remind you that this Saturday is National Pie Day and we are selling our three-inch tarts for $3 each all day. I’ve gotten quite a few emails about why National Pie Day isn’t March 14th and for that answer, I can only direct you to the American Pie Council. (That said, I just looked at their website and it hasn’t updated it since 2019 except to say the annual pie championships have been cancelled because of a “world wide health scare”. I think the word they are looking for is PANDEMIC.) At any rate, they pick the annual pie day celebration date. As for PJP, we will celebrate on both January 23rd AND March 14th because we are very extra that way.
So, in other news, we are getting a little bit of the creativity back that seems to fall by the wayside in our busiest of baking seasons. We are doing a super cute Kansas City Chiefs pie in Raspberry Key Lime for this weekend’s AFC championship game. I almost said it would be the perfect dessert for your game watching gatherings, but no one gathers now…so it would be the perfect dessert for you and your core group of people.
We’ve also been working on a Buffalo Chicken Pot Pie. In full disclosure, I don’t like buffalo chicken because I have old lady heartburn and my esophagus seizes up at the thought of any spice level. (I’m a solid zero on the Scoville scale.). But, the majority of Team PJP covers most of our communal lunches in hot sauce, so I’m in the minority. I’ll also add here that my teenage son eschews both the chicken pot pie and beef pot pie because he is super picky, but ate the entire Buffalo Chicken pot pie when I brought it home for the family taste test. That could be the best endorsement I could ever offer you on a product (and look, last week I made taco soup and then watched him systematically pick all the black beans out of his soup before he ate it.). It’s on the baking schedule for tomorrow and in the front freezer tomorrow afternoon.
And finally, I’ve been reading with keen interest about the city’s plan for pay-as-you-go trash removal. And I primarily, I’m happy we live in the county because we make a lot of trash at our house (removed black beans have to go somewhere, right?). And second, I’m keeping one eye on our dumpster at PJP because my guess is that the commercial dumpsters will fill up with the trash that others don’t want to pay to have removed. And since we’ve had both a washing machine AND a deer head in our dumpster, literally anything is possible.
