Until Today
Well, we are back from a short fall getaway to Las Vegas to celebrate our son’s 21st birthday. And nothing has made me feel more ancient than sharing cocktails with my firstborn (but even so, it was a great time). We left on Sunday morning and returned late last night and we were back at PJP early this morning.
Let’s catch up:
The order system for Thanksgiving 2023 is now open and accepting orders until Sunday, November 12th. We made a few changes this year, adding a lattice topped pie (Blue Goose) and replacing French Silk with Turtle based on the popularity in sales.
Results of last week’s Epic Pie Tasting are in and the winner was Bourbon Caramel Apple, which is essentially Caramel Apple but we made the caramel sauce with a healthy dose of bourbon. I’m sorry to say that the loser was my idea…we made chocolate chess and dropped a ball of cookie dough in the middle. The goal was sort of a brookie (a cookie and brownie), but instead it was just weird.
Everyone is always curious about the rest of the rankings, so here they are from first to last: Bourbon Caramel Apple, Snickers, Sweet Potato with marshmallow and candied pecans, Caramel Bourbon Cream, Cinnamon, and Chocolate Chess Cookie.
Just in time for my return, PJP Nifong had a health inspection today. We’ve had two inspections a year for almost 10 years, so I’m pretty unfazed at this point. UNTIL TODAY. Today, the inspector asked me if our refrigerators had thermometers and I said yes…each unit has a digital thermometer on the front of the unit. Except apparently now the health department has decided those aren’t reliable and that we also need to purchase digital thermometers for the inside of the units. I have a lot of questions about the regulatory genesis of the thermometers-on-the-inside decision, but I would bet there isn’t actually a written regulation addressing dual thermometers because it was more of a decision by someone who thought it sounded like a good idea. I could be wrong, but I don’t think so.
And finally, because I shared Jeanne’s birthday cake that one of our talented bakers created, I have to show you what Jessi created for Hayden’s 21st. It’s a tall task to create a birthday cake for a 21 year old guy who doesn’t want anything overly fancy for fussy, but Jessi outdid herself as always.
